How this map works

Positions are not polled from a tracking API. The map loads two-line element sets (TLEs) published by CelesTrak and propagates every orbit locally in your browser using the SGP4/SDP4 model (via satellite.js) — the same mathematics used for operational satellite tracking. The view updates continuously; the underlying orbital elements are refreshed at most once every 24 hours.

To keep the 3D view fast, each constellation is sampled server-side (for example ~300 of the thousands of Starlink satellites) with even coverage across the whole group — the "Show all satellites" toggle lifts the caps and loads full catalogs. Use the search box to find any satellite by name or NORAD catalog number, and filter by owner/country, object type (payload, rocket body, debris — matched from the CelesTrak satellite catalog), orbit class (LEO / MEO / GEO / highly elliptical), inclination and altitude band. Click a dot to see its live telemetry, orbit path and visibility footprint — the circle of Earth surface where the satellite is currently above the horizon.

How many satellites orbit Earth?

CelesTrak's public catalog tracks well over 11,000 payloads, and the number keeps climbing — driven mostly by the Starlink and OneWeb broadband megaconstellations in low Earth orbit, which you can toggle on above. Beyond satellites, tens of thousands of debris objects are tracked as well (not shown here).
